Peter obtained his initial optometry qualification in Queensland in 1974. He practiced in a solo practice in Brisbane from 1975 to 1986, when he left Brisbane to take up a lecturing position at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. Peter later became Clinical Director in the Optometry School at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, then Head of the Department of Optometry, Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. He completed a Master of applied Science by Research in 1996, a PhD in 2006, and a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics in 2008. In 2007 Peter took up a Senior Lecturer role at the School of Optometry, Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, and later was Head of School from 2008 to 2018. Peter chairs the WCO Education Committee, and is President of the Asia-Pacific Council of Optometry. He also chairs the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand, the optometry course accreditation authority.
